Richard E. Armstrong was born on June 3, 1922, in Alameda County, California. He served in the 643rd Bomber Squadron, 409th Bomber Group, as a Second Lieutenant and a Pilot of the A-20 Havoc #43-9889 during World War II. He was shot down together with his 2 comrades over Rennes, crashing in Montgermont, France, on July 9, 1944. All members were Killed in Action. 2Lt Armstrong was awarded the Purple Heart. He was buried first at Montgermont cemetery and later was transferred to the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.
