Frank A. Assaro was born on August 2, 1924, in Utica, Oneida County, New York. He was the son of Nicholas Assaro and Josephine Sciortino Assaro.

Assaro was a graduate of Proctor High School, class of 1942. He enlisted in the Air Corps in February 1943 and received basic training in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Hamilton Field, California. He graduated as a serial gunner from the Las Vegas Gunnery School and was given advanced flying training at Florence, South Carolina.

He served in the 643rd Bomber Squadron, 409th Bomber Group, as a Sergeant and a gunner of A-20 No. 43-9889 during World War II. He was shot down together with his 2 comrades over Rennes, crashing in Montgermont, France, on July 9, 1944. All members were Killed in Action. Sgt Assaro was awarded the Citation of Honor and the Purple Heart posthumously. He was buried first at Montgermont cemetery. His body was returned to the US and buried at Calvary Cemetery, Utica, Oneida County, New York, USA on October 18, 1948.
