John R. Banke Jr. was born on October 1, 1923, in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. He was the son of John Richard Banke Sr. and Mary Veronica "Mae" Pettinato Banke.
John Banke attended the Lincoln and Dickinson High Schools. He was a former ironworker helper at the marine repair yard. Banke entered the Army on April 13, 1943. He served in Company K, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and MOS 746 Automatic Rifleman during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 13, 1944, during the Liberation of Saint-Malo in France. He was buried at Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
