James F. Brems was born on March 8, 1926, in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York. He was the son of James Nicholas Brems and Tessie Chapman Brems.

James Brems attended the Haverstraw High School in 1943. After a short time of employment with the New York Central Railroad, he enlisted in the Army on August 10, 1943. He was in a paratroop outfit at first but later was transferred to the Infantry. Pfc. Brems served in Company K, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and MOS 745 Rifleman during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 13, 1944, during the Liberation of Saint-Malo in France. He was buried at Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France, and was awarded the Purple Hea
