Willard J. Kirchmer Jr. was born on May 25, 1920. He was the son of Willard John Kirchmer and Florence C. Barratt Kirchmer.

He served in Company K, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. 2Lt. Kirchmer was Killed in Action on August 12, 1944, during the Liberation of Saint-Malo in France. He was buried at Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
