Richard L. Tope was born on July 26, 1920. He was the son of Ernst J. Tope and Lillian Robinson Tope. He attended the Decatur High School. Before entering service, he was employed by the Bellmont Trucking Company in this city.
Richard Tope entered service on December 10, 1943. He served in Company K, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 12, 1944, during the Liberation of Saint-Malo in France. Pvt. Tope was buried at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Adams County, Indiana, USA, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
