Maurice Leo Van Zandt Jr. was born on July 12, 1921, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He served in Company I, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant and MOS 653 Squad Leader during World War II. SSgt. Maurice was Killed in Action on August 11, 1944, during the Liberation of Saint-Malo in France. he was buried at Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
