Nelson F. J. Hornbaker was born on August 10, 1919, in Weston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Lewis Henry Hornbaker and Eva Mae Werdebaugh Hornbaker. He was the husband of Anna Marie Hornbaker.
Nelson served in the 507th Parachute Infantry Regt, 17th Airborne Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on June 11, 1944, during the Battle of Graignes in France. SSgt Hornbaker was buried at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
