Charles Douglas Johnston III was born on May 26, 1918, in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. He was the son of Charles Douglass Johnston Jr. and Katherine "Kate" Dunn Johnston.
Charles served in the 507th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Major and an Executive Officer during World War II. Major Johnston was Killed in Action on June 11, 1944, when he was hit by an 88mm round while in the command post. He was buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, USA, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
