Sam Vanich was born on February 11, 1921, in Yorkville, Belmont County, Ohio. He was the son of Zivko Vanich. He graduated from Midland High School in 1940. He served in Company I, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II. Pvt Vanich was Killed in Action on June 6, 1988, while advancing toward a German machinegun position on the road to Grainville, France. He is now buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton, Stark County, Ohio, USA, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
