Donald Albert “Don” Earwood was born on September 21, 1922, in Whiting, Monona County, Iowa. He was the son of Bert A. Earwood and Ethel Earwood. He was married to Lorene Grossner.
Earwood served in the 1st Ranger Battalion, and was transferred to Company F, 4th Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. Don finished his service as a Staff Sergeant. He returned to the US with the wounded Rangers on May 3, 1944, on the USS Edward Richardson. SSgt Earwood died on July 31, 1987, and is now buried in Harris Grove Cemetery, Beebeetown, Harrison County, Iowa, USA.
