Joe C. Phillips was born on June 28, 1923. He served in Company A, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. Joe transferred to the 3rd Ranger Battalion and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He was captured during the Battle of Cisterna, Italy. He spent 16 months as a POW. SSgt Philips died on December 8, 1963, and is now buried in Ryder Cemetery, Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky, USA.
