Leonard Lewis Blume was born on July 23, 1915, in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina. He was the son of Edwin Christian Steinmeyer Jr. and Lenna Hogg Steinmeyer. His birth last name was Steinmeyer. His mother died about a week after he was born and he was adopted by the Blume family.

Leonard served in the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, as a Technician 4th Grade during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 30, 1944, when a German artillery shell struck their tank. T4 Blume is now buried in Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
