Elmer S. Ackerman was born on February 14, 1925, in Woodhull, Steuben County, New York. He was the son of Edgar H. Ackerman and Ella Mae Hartwell Ackerman.

Elmer served in the 70th Tank Battalion as a Private during World War II. He was declared as Missing in Action on August 27, 1944, during the liberation of Chelles, France. Pvt Ackerman's name was memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
