Gano Haines �Sonny� Jewell was born on September 21, 1923, in Westville, Otsego County, New York. He was the son of Harold Gano Jewell and Jewel Martin Parslow Jewell. He enlisted in the n the army reserve in November 1942.

Gano served in the Medical Detachment, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 4, 1944, during the liberation of Landelles-et-Coupigny, France. PFC Jewell is now buried in the Westville Cemetery, Middlefield, Otsego County, New York, USA.
