Irving Nicholson Hurley was born on August 2, 1919, in Rutledge, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Raymond Hurley. He was a member of the Springfield High School Class of 1937. He joined the army in 1941.

Irving served in the 746th Tank Battalion as a First Lieutenant a First Lieutenant and Platoon leader in Company B, 746th Tank Battalion. 1Lt Hurley led a tank that knocked out the first German tank on D-Day, fought at Neuville-au-Plain, and helped liberate captured 82nd Airborne paratroopers, before succumbing to severe wounds on June 12, 1944. He is now buried in the Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA.
