James Victor Chittick was born on July 31, 1914, in New Mexico. He was the son of Victor Young Chittick and Lorene M. Huber Chittick. He was the husband of Geraldine Beisel Chittick. He graduated from Frankfort High School in 1931 and earned both B.A. and M.A. degrees from Indiana University. Before enlisting, he taught social studies in Dayton, Indiana, and Rossville, Illinois.

James served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 8, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. 1Lt Chittick is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
