Richard John Hanson was born on May 28, 1920, in Hoffman, Grant County, Minnesota. He was the son of John C. Hanson and Lena Datwyler Hanson. He was married to Lorraine Alice Weaver Hanson. He is a graduate of Box Elder High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
Richard was captured by the German forces during fighting in Europe on or about May 24, 1944, and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft IV in Braunau, near Krems, Austria. He survived the infamous "Death March" across Germany, an 83-day journey in which many of his comrades perished. SSgt Hanson died on December 13, 2005, and is now buried in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA.
