Richard Garfield Weede was born on September 26, 1911, in Sterling, Kansas. He was the son of Garfield Wilson Weede and Rachel Ethyle Porter Weede. He was married to Margaret Lou Dunton Weede. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1935. After completing Basic School, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, serving in San Diego and Guam before the war.
During World War II, he commanded antiaircraft and artillery units in the Pacific Theater, playing key roles in the Tarawa and Okinawa campaigns. For his service, he received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V". After the war, he worked in ordnance and education roles before returning to combat during the Korean War, where he led the 5th Marine Regiment in the Battle of the Punchbowl and earned the Legion of Merit with Combat "V".
Post-Korea, Weede served in leadership roles, including at Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, and Headquarters Marine Corps. In Vietnam, he was Chief of Staff of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) from 1962 to 1964, receiving the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1967, he commanded Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, retiring in 1969 after 34 years of service. LtG Weede died on October 22, 1985, and is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
