James D. Campbell was born on January 27, 1922, in Lawrence County, Illinois. He was the son of Daniel Edward Campbell and Lydia M. Turnmire Campbell. He served in Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a Corporal during World War II.

Cpl Campbell was Killed in Action on October 8, 1944, during the Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands. He is now buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Saint Francisville, Lawrence County, Illinois, USA.
