B-24 (42-110081) 'Able Mabel' Memorial -93rd Bomber Group
Floyd Robert Cook was born on December 26, 1923, in Menahga, Wadena County, Minnesota. He was the son of George Herbert Cook and Isis Una Turnbull Cook. He was married to Madelyn Weist. He was enlisted in the service on April 8, 1942. He served in the 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of B-24 #42-110081 nicknamed "Able Mabel" during World War II.
On June 19, 1944, while on a mission targeting V-1 launch sites in northern France, the aircraft was struck by German anti-aircraft fire (Flak) over Maldegem, Belgium. The damage led to a fire in the right wing, causing the aircraft to lose altitude and ultimately crash in the Sint-Jozef district of Bruges. Of the ten crew members, three were killed, and seven survived the crash, with several becoming prisoners of war.
1Lt Floyd was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Jeffers Cemetery, Jeffers, Cottonwood County, Minnesota, USA.
