James R. Hattrick was born on January 24, 1921, in North Carolina. He was the son of George Oliver Hattrich and Lena May Britt Hattrich. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 25, 1942, and volunteered for parachute training. He served in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private during World War II.
On June 6, 1944, the Division parachuted into Normandy on D-Day. James landed near the village of Gourbesville, took up a sniper position in a woodpile, and killed multiple German soldiers before he was fatally shot in the head. He is now buried in the Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA.
