Leroy Kenneth Bayless was born on May 22, 1925, in Clear Lake, Skagit County, Washington. He was the son of Charles F. Bayless. He enlisted in the service on September 13, 1943. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner of B-17 #43-38697 during World War II.
On October 15, 1944, while based at Nuthampstead, Sgt Bayless flew his first combat mission over Cologne, Germany. Tragically, he died of hypoxia during the mission. He is now buried in the Sumner Cemetery, Sumner, Pierce County, Washington, USA. Leroy K. Bayless' name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 28, in the top right wing (section B).
