Harold Lee Blackwell was born on June 25, 1923, in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. He served in the 478th Army Air Forces Sub Depot, 398th Bomb Group, as a Private during World War II.
Private Blackwell tragically lost his life in a ground accident while serving in the European Theater. While assisting in the loading of a 500-pound bomb onto a B-17 Flying Fortress, the munition accidentally detonated, resulting in his death on June 15, 1944. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England. Harold L. Blackwell's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 17, in the bottom left wing (section C).
