Charles Andrew Borden was born on January 29, 1920, in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. He was the son of Charles S. Borden and Emma L. Mudders Borden. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner of B-17 #42-107186 during World War II.
On August 4, 1944, during a mission targeting Peenemünde, Germany, the aircraft was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire (flak) and crashed near Fresendorf Beach, close to Greifswald, Germany. All nine crew members aboard were killed in action.
Sgt Borden is now buried in the Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio, USA. Charles A. Borden's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 26, in the bottom right wing (section D).
