Harvey Jackson “Jack” Boyd was born on April 3, 1924, in Lewistown, Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of Moses B. "Mose" Boyd and Sue R. Jackson Boyd. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of B-17 #42-107186 during World War II.
On August 4, 1944, during a mission targeting Peenemünde, Germany, the aircraft was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire (flak) and crashed near Fresendorf Beach, close to Greifswald, Germany. All nine crew members aboard were killed in action.
2Lt Boyd was reported Missing in Action and officially declared dead on August 4, 1944. His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands. Harvey J. Boyd's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 26, in the bottom right wing (section D).
