Robert William Dudley was born on July 3, 1924, in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. He was the son of Jacob Wilfred Dudley and Irene Reinbolt Dudley. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Top Turret Gunner of B-17 #44-6573 during World War II.

On March 2, 1945, B-17G 44-6573 participated in a bombing mission targeting the synthetic oil plant in Bohlen, Germany. During the mission, the aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters and sustained critical damage. It crashed near Slaný, close to Karlovy Vary in what is now the Czech Republic.

Sgt Dudley was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, USA. Robert W. Dudley's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 25, in the top right wing (section B).
