Augustine S. Franzone was born on July 29, 1920, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Salvatore Franzone and Antonina Corso Franzone. He enlisted in the service on December 17, 1941. He served in the 603rd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II.
2Lt Franzone was Killed in Action during a nighttime training flight near Martin, South Dakota, on January 17, 1944. The aircraft experienced an engine fire, leading to a crash approximately one mile west of Martin. The accident resulted in the deaths of seven crew members.
2Lt Franzone is now buried in the Saint Anthonys Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. Augustine S. Franzone's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 22, in the top left wing (section A).
