Max William Paxton was born on January 7, 1924, in Cain Township, Fountain County, Indiana. He was the son of William Lee Paxton and Minnie Alice Voirol Paxton. He served in the 600th Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Tail Gunner of B-17 #43-38853 during World War II.

On April 10, 1945, during a bombing mission targeting the Oranienburg area near Berlin, the aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire (flak) and subsequently crashed in Berlin. Tragically, six were killed in action, and four were captured and became prisoners of war.

SSgt Paxton was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium. Max W. Paxton's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 3 (right), on Butterfly 22, in the top right wing (section B) and in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 13, in the top right wing (section B)..
