James Grady Bates was born on December 21, 1921, in Walker County, Alabama. He was the son of Richard Lee Bates and Thelma Vann Tunnell. He served in the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.
PFC Bates was Killed in Action on August 18, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
