Bernard Anthony Carrather was born on October 28, 1920, in Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. He was the son of Jo Hannah "Josephine" McKenzie Carrather. He served in the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.

SSgt Carrather was Killed in Action on August 20, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
