Theodore Grunert Jr. was born on May 30, 1924, in White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Theodore Charles Grunert and Mary Elma Kohl Grunert. He served in the 702nd Tank Battalion as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Grunert was reported Missing in Action and officially declared dead on August 19, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
