Joseph Jacob Helfen was born on February 27, 1910. He was the son of Jacob Mathias Helfen and Augusta Dorothy Fickus Helfen. He worked as a crane operator before enlisting in the service in July 1942. He served in the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.
PFC Helfen was Killed in Action on August 19, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, Lake County, Indiana, USA.
