William Lee Herold was born on November 13, 1912, in Sutton, Braxton County, West Virginia. He was the son of Anderson Claughton Herold Sr. and Phoebe Genevieve Lee Herold. He was married to Eleanor O'Rear. He served in the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.

LtC Herold died from his wounds received in battle on August 20, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
