John Paul Vargo was born on September 19, 1919, in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. He was the son of Alex Vargo Sr. and Mary Kovacs Vargo. He served in the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt Vargo was Killed in Action on August 19, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
