Joseph E. Zilla was born on September 10, 1919. He was the son of Joseph F. Zilla and Mary E. Zilla. He worked as a clerk before enlisting in the service on July 2, 1942. He served in the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II.

T5 Zilla was Killed in Action on August 18, 1944, during the liberation of Argentan, France. He is now buried in the Saint John the Baptist Cemetery of the Blessed Sacrament, Throop, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, USA.
