Robert Sharp Hart was born on August 17, 1920, in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Frank William Hart and Bemis Sharp Hart. He served in the 350th Fighter Squadron, 353rd Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of P-47 Thunderbolt #42-26454 during World War II.

On August 8, 1944, the aircraft crashed near Gaudechart, about 5 kilometers south of Grandvilliers in the Oise department of France. It had departed from Station 157 in Raydon, Suffolk, UK, for a mission targeting Amiens. Around 13:45, during a strafing attack, the aircraft was caught in the blast of a fuel truck it had just struck, resulting in critical damage that led to its crash.

1Lt Hart was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
