Gerald B. Heinz was born on November 4, 1922, in Anaheim, Orange County, California. He was the son of Bernard John "Ben" Heinz and Anna Marie Kirsch Heinz. He served in the 326th Ferrying and Routing Squadron, 1st Troop Carrier Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of Noorduyn Norseman #43-35390 during World War II.
On January 2, 1945, the aircraft went down near Eméville, roughly 12 kilometers northeast of Crépy-en-Valois in France’s Oise department. It was on a mail transport mission between several advanced landing grounds—A-81, A-67, A-80, and A-97—after departing from airfield A-82 at Étain/Rouvres, where it had made an unexplained stop. Around 16:30, the formation encountered an area of zero visibility, forcing the aircraft to separate. While 2nd Lt. Zimmer managed a successful emergency landing, 2nd Lt. Gerald B. Heinz, flying the second UC-64, tragically crashed.
2Lt Heinz was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange, Orange County, California, USA.
