Bobb Francis Ross was born on July 7, 1918, in Darrington, Snohomish County, Washington. He was the son of Albert John Ross and Angela Marie O'Neill Ross. He served in the 525th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of B-17F #42-29633 during World War II.
On February 8, 1944, the aircraft crash-landed in France while on a mission to Frankfurt, Germany. It had taken off earlier that morning at 08:15 from Station 117 in Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, UK. Around 12:06, as it flew over the Oise department near La Grange Turpin in the commune of Monchy-Humières—approximately 8 kilometers northwest of Compiègne—it came under attack by enemy fighters. Several crew members were able to evacuate before the pilot performed a belly landing. Shortly after, the aircraft caught fire and exploded.
2Lt Ross was Killed in Action when his parachute failed to open. He is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium.
