Henry Augustus Coit was born on May 26, 1888, in Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He was the son of Joseph Howland Coit and Adeline Balch Coit. He was a graduate of Harvard University. He initially served with the 5th University Company and later joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (P.P.C.L.I.) as a Private on June 9, 1916.

Pvt Coit died from his wounds received in battle on August 7, 1916, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
