Edmund Garretson Cook was born on November 11, 1885, in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. He was the son of Frank D. and Mary Garretson of Landsdowne, Philadelphia. He was married to Frances Kent Cook and father to Edmund Garretson Cook Jr. He served in the 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards, as a Private during World War I.

Pvt Cook died on August 10, 1917, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Westvleteren, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium..
