Richard Stanley Merrill Emrich was born on January 26, 1878, in Mechanic Falls, Androscoggin County, Maine. He was the son of Frederick Ernest Emrich and Olive Emma Chandler Emrich. He was the husband of Jeannette Emrich. He was an American missionary and clergyman who dedicated his life to religious service and humanitarian work in the Middle East.

Richard is a representative of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.). He served in Mardin, Turkey, where he was involved in relief and missionary efforts during a time of great upheaval in the region, including World War I and the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide. He passed away on May 6, 1919, in Aleppo, Syria, while still actively engaged in his mission. Richard is now buried in the Beirut War Cemetery, Beirut, Lebanon.
