John Theodore Hanlon was born on April 3, 1898, in Hermosa, Custer County, South Dakota. He was the son of Jeremiah Francis "Jerry" Hanlon and Emilia Victoria Hesnard Hanlon. He served in the 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment), as a Private during World War I.
Pvt Hanlon died from his wounds received in battle on November 17, 1917, in Belgium. He is now buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
