Alfred John Avalon Hutchins was born on July 29, 1897, in Santa Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California. He was the son of Alfred and Alice Maude Hutchins. He served in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, as a Second Lieutenant during World War I.

2Lt Hutchins died on March 22, 1918, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Harelbeke, Arrondissement Kortrijk, West Flanders, Belgium.
