Stanley Burton Bonner was born on July 14, 1904, in Lemhi County, Idaho. He was the son of Frank Burton Bonner and Olive Louise Sharkey Bonner. He was married to Eileen Hillye. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1927. He served in the 21st Field Artillery Regiment, 21st Division Philippine Army as a Major in the Philippines during World War II.
Maj Bonner was captured after the Japanese invasion and held at PW Camp #1 in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, until December 1944, when he was transferred to the Oryoku Maru for transport to Japan. Records indicate MAJ Bonner survived the attack on the Oryoku Maru and was eventually transferred to the Brazil Maru. He died of starvation and dysentery on January 25, 1945, while aboard the Brazil Maru, and he was buried at sea.
His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph in the United States Military Academy Post Cemetery, West Point, Orange County, New York, USA.
