Charles Jacob Gilden was born on January 28, 1921, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Charles Thomas Gilden and Agnes Lodholz Walker. He was married to Gwyneth Blauer Gilden. He enlisted in the service on December 10, 1942. He served as a Private First Class and combat medic with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, during World War II, taking part in the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach in France.

PFC Gilden ended his military service as a Captain. He died on April 27, 2001, and is now buried in the Providence City Cemetery, Providence, Cache County, Utah, USA.
