John Merrill Hepler was born on March 31, 1925, in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Roy Painter Hepler and Alta Ruth Merrill. He enlisted in the service on July 18, 1943. He served as a Private and combat medic with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, during World War II, taking part in the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach in France.

Pvt Hepler was discharged from the U.S. Army on August 20, 1945. He died on January 23, 1999, and has a cenotaph in the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, USA.
