Silver Star Citation:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Earl L. Jacobson (ASN: 36222896), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When his battalion was subjected to intense enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, Private Jacobson continually exposed himself to the enemy and rendered first aid to numerous wounded men. Although his battalion withdrew to more favorable locations, Private Jacobson remained under fire until his medical equipment had been destroyed by the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
