Robert Donald Kellett was born on December 1, 1922, in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Gilbert and Dorothy Kellett. He was married to Betty Jane Bodoh. He went to Lincoln School and graduated from Senior High school in 1940. He worked as a clerk in the engineering department of the Giddings and Lewis plant. He enlisted in the service in Milwaukee on January 23, 1943. He was attached to an antiaircraft unit. In March 1944, Kellett was transferred to the infantry. He was assigned to overseas duty on September 17, 1944, and served in the 79th Infantry Division in the 315th Infantry Regiment in General Alexander Patch's Seventh Army.
On November 15, 1944, he led his platoon from A Company, 1st Battalion in the assault on Halloville, France, as part of the American advance through the Vosges Mountains toward the Saverne Gap. During the battle, his unit came under intense German machine-gun and tank fire while attacking enemy positions near Hill 331, south of the village. 2Lt Kellett was initially reported Missing in Action during the battle and was officially declared Killed in Action five days later, following the successful capture of Halloville and the surrender of about 140 German soldiers. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France. His courage and sacrifice are honored in the village, where the town square now bears his name, “Place du 2e Lieutenant Robert Donald Kellett.”
