Earl Leonard Brown was born on December 17, 1913, in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. He was the son of Ora Vincent Brown and Cora Leota Holloway Brown. He was employed as a farm laborer and registered for the draft in October 1940, remaining in Declo before spending two years in naval construction work in Hawaii. He was later inducted into the Army at Boise on 23 December 1943. Earl had completed four years of high school and was considered semi-skilled in construction. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Brown was Killed in Action on September 1, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
